Project Description

Located on the Mohegan Tribe's reservation in Connecticut, this project added 4,930,000 square feet for hotel, casino, retail, arena, dining and parking. Delivered on a fast-track schedule, construction of each component was phased to allow key elements to be opened prior to the total completion of the facility. The 34-story hotel tower has 1,200 luxurious guest rooms and 186 suites offering an abundance of space, and the latest amenities and business technologies. A 40,000-square-foot spa, fitness center and salon provides a complete array of services including private spa-therapy rooms and sauna. A large indoor-outdoor pool is partially enclosed by sliding glass walls and large sky-light exposures. The convention center is in close proximity to both the hotel and casino, allowing direct access to and from each element. The center provides a considerable amenity for conventioneers, and features over 100,000 square feet of premier meeting and function space. The centerpiece of the convention center is the 40,000-square-foot Uncas Ballroom, which can accommodate a single large event or can be subdivided into 10 smaller rooms. Thirty additional conference and breakout rooms can accommodate any function, and pre-function space provides a gathering location.

The 10,000-seat sports and entertainment arena is an integral part of the entertainment program at Mohegan Sun. 5,000 retractable seats can accommodate crowds for a diverse array of events including boxing and basketball to football and tennis to concerts. A 300-seat cabaret theatre provides a more intimate stage for performers. Featuring 225,000 square feet of retail space, over 50 shops provide a mix of distinctive shops and name brands. New restaurants and lounges are situated around a two-story atrium. Casino of the Sky is a richly-themed gaming environment to celebrate the heritage of the Tribe. A tree-inspired, winged porte-cochere marks the entry to the new casino and the world's largest planetarium dome over the casino furthers its natural landscape. Standing in the center of the casino is Wombi Rock, a soaring structure of translucent alabaster and onyx that houses three levels of entertainment venues including a lounge and dance floor. The project also includes a 2,600-space employee parking garage (Eagleview Garage), 2,500-space Riverview Parking Garage, 1,500-space Thames Garage, and a central plant. Mohegan Sun in conjunction with the Mohegan Tribe instituted various green initiatives including fuel cell technology, photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps, as well as infrared technology in hotel guest rooms. The project incorporated facilities for recycling of food and other waste materials property wide.
